City Wall Gin – The Newcastle Gin Co.

City Wall Gin

The Newcastle Distillery’s City Wall Gin initially appeared on my radar when Lidl ran its debut British Gin Festival at the end of last year. Although intrigued, it’s only recently that I have sampled this dry gin.

What does it taste like?

At 40%, the light floral gin from Newcastle’s first commercial distillery is an easy drink. It’s fairly dry and although there are nine botanicals included, the juniper and orange peel are the dominant flavours that come through.

To get the most out of the gin, it definitely needs a premium tonic. I sampled it with lemon Fever tree and a supermarket own brand and as expected, the premium came out miles on top. The lemon, along with a slice of lime, pairs perfectly and needs this citrus/fruity flavour to enhance the gin. Otherwise, it does merge into a series of other mediocre dry gins.

Would I buy again?

Possibly not as it does not stand out enough in the already saturated market but this said, it was very pleasant on a sunny summer’s evening over ice.
