Gin spotting in the US

We always like a bit of gin spotting and so it was high on our list of priorities while visiting US supermarkets!

While gin isn’t massive in the US, it’s still considered niche, there are some interesting ones on sale in the supermarkets.

Big Gin

This gin is from Washington and is barrel aged in bourbon barrels.

Tasting notes from their website – Nose: Sappy pine, beeswax with a hint of marmalade, then a swirl of spice. Taste: A lovely interplay between the gin and the wood. There are elements of wood sap, beeswax and resinous juniper. This is followed by some more intense spiciness such as a complex green cardamom, which moves on to a more mellow spice with vanilla and a light cinnamon, as well as some hints of wood. This is a sterling example of good balance in the interaction of spirit and barrel. This sounds lovely! Shame we can’t take a bottle home with us!

Prairie Gin

We spotted this organic gin in Sioux Falls.

Notes from their website –

Bursts of herbs, sage, juniper and exotic spices, complementing a dry and refreshing taste with a long, delicate finish. It’s smooth from the ground up and easy going down.

Again, this sounds like a great gin! Going to have to keep an eye out for it on the back bar of the next bar we go to!
